Prattville, AL

Well might you ask where is Prattville?  Actually, it's a few miles NW of Montgomery, AL.  I'm staying here on my way to Charleston to see my sister - Mary Ann and her husband Stuart.  I wanted to travel through Montgomery because I had been stationed here for a brief period while I attended Squadron Officers School.  It's kind of a round robin way to get to Charleston and I'll return to Pensacola on Monday through Jacksonville.

I left Pensacola around noon today and headed north on 29.  Problem with that route was that they had a terrible truck accident a few miles south of Flomaton AL.  Somehow a tractor trailer managed to flip over and block both lanes of traffic.  Due to there not being any shoulders on that highway, traffic came to a complete stop.  One truck tried to go around and he got stuck, further increasing the problem.  After sitting at a standstill for almost an hour, I had the opportunity to turn around and find a different way north.  Had to backtrack about eight miles and took the road to Atmore which is where Char, Deb and I had just been.  Almost made it back to George's place of business but turned on to I-65 and headed north to Montgomery.  On the way I had the opportunity to pass by Wind Creek Casino (the casino operated by the Poarch Creek Tribe).  It's a huge building (hotel and casino), didn't stop to play.

Easy drive (couple of hours) to Montgomery and stopped at Maxwell AFB to check out the area and base facilities.  Surprisingly, there was another Wind Creek Casino in Montgomery - the Creeks like to take advantage of a lot of business opportunities.

Char lost her company today - I left to go to Charleston and Deb left to go back home.  We did manage to take a couple of pictures (see below).  George may be home next week as they are closing the clinic for the week between Christmas and New Years.  We're taking bets on whether George will continue to go to work for a day or two next week - any takers?

Beautiful sunshine and temps in the 60's.  Made for a great drive. Lots of farmland and wooded areas.  One of the interesting farm products is pine - how would you like to wait twenty years to harvest your crop?  Good thing they are able to stagger the pinelands.  The pine is mostly used in paper mills (don't get downwind of a papermill).

Staying at the Quality Inn in Prattville.  Maxwell was a nice stop and it's the Educational Base for both the Air Force and Space Command.  Kind of like the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey is for the Navy.

Should be an interesting drive tomorrow through Alabama and Georgia to get to South Carolina.
