Atmore, AL
Today was another beautiful day in Pensacola. A little on the cool side, but the sun was out and warmed us up considerably. After breakfast, Char, me, and Debbie Bechtel (friend of Char's who is visiting from St Petersburg, FL), went over to Char and George's rental house which they are cleaning up to put on the market. A little yardwork and clean-up in the shed and then we went back to Char's.
We decided to take a trip up to Canoe, AL and Atmore, Al (about 45 minutes north of Pensacola). Char and George have bought a barndomium in Canoe where George can stay and be closer to work at the Poarch Creek Indian Reservation where he is the Medical Director. If you haven't heard of a barndominium, don't worry - neither had I nor my correction help hadn't either. It kept trying to give me another word :-). Effectively, it's a barn in the country with small living quarters attached. George has a full-size camping trailer which he keeps in the barn and will use as his during-the-week living quarters. It will save him a horrendous commute on a daily basis, and he'll be able to come home on weekends. I'm going to try and include a link to the photos we took today so that you will get a better idea.
The barndomium (love that word - but in the photos I shortened it to 'b') is located on some acreage (I think seventeen, but I'm not sure). There are cotton fields and corn in that area as you can see from the photos. They're harvesting cotton in this area, like they were in Texas. Huge bales of cotton in the fields ready to go to the center.
For lunch, we stopped at the Catfish House in Atmore where we had a great lunch, I had catfish fillets and hush puppies, Debbie had gumbo, and Char had a shrimp dish. Good food and we won't have to worry about what to have for dinner. Char talked to George, and he invited us out to the Clinic where he works so that we could get a tour. Quite an operation and the reservation is quite complete with all the facilities you would want. In some respects, it's kind of like a small military base. As I said above, it's the Poarch Creek tribe and they have investments in all parts of the country and some overseas. Locally, they have a casino which is a little distance from the clinic.
After the tour, we headed back to Pensacola - I don't remember much of the trip back because I took a nap (in the back seat with Cousteau). The evening was spent in conversation, watching "White Christmas" and a charcuterie platter which was all we needed after a hearty lunch.
This weekend, I'm going to take a drive over to Charleston, SC to visit with Mary Ann and Stu. I plan on stopping along the way and make it an interesting drive. First stop will be at Montgomery, AL where I went to Squadron Officer's School back in the day. I'll keep you posted via the blog on my travels.
